Uli Jon Roth

What can I say , this man is my hero for many many years now, his phrasing, tonality, sound and feel he puts into his guitarplaying is far beyond the "normal"guitar heroïsm as we see from so many. To me he really stands on top and need to have some binocculars to see the competition. Back in the 70's with the Scorpions, his groundbreaking use of harmonic scales, arpeggio's, feedback and extreme whammy techniques (Fly to the Rainbow) really shook my world, it was so intense yet so sheerfull I was hooked in a heartbeat. His solo albums Eartquake and Firewind were so wonderfull to me that I soon needed other copies because these were worn out, after a long wait of about 5 years the third solo album was born: Beyond the Astral Skies with the introduction of the Sky Guitar, carrying 30 frets. Beautifull songs with yet again groundbreaking guitarisms, for instance the solo part from "I'll be There" is a true masterpiece, climbing the neck to squeeze those extreme high notes out of it with a great release in "Return, Chant of Angels" (He actually played it on the Stratocaster's pickups and not on the Sky Guitar).

Later, in 1995 he released the "Prologue to The Symphonic Legends" album with the breathtaking song called "Pegasus". This album contains less guitarplaying but still great songs.

In 2000 Uli releases a double CD named "Transcendental Sky Guitar" which contains compositions of Vivaldi, Mendelsohn, Mozart, Chopin and Paganini as well some of Jimi Hendrix and Uli's own songs .... a 2 hour treat !

2004, another masterpiece called "Metamorphosis" is released containing a guitar version of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the title song Metamorphosis .... this is as close you can get to a violin with a guitar ...

I'll say it in one word; "Ab-so-lut-ly-stun-ning"

I saw and met Uli a few times now, with the G3 tour (24-05-1998), supporting Glenn Hughes (31-05-2001 & 02-06-2001), in Helmond 27-03-2004 supporting UFO and solo back in 1985 (I believe 04-03-1985) Paradiso Holland
